The Bull Market: why are Frenchies expensive?

French Bulldogs are expensive.  Current prices tend to run in the four figures for companion animals and can go to five figures or higher for rare colors or show-quality dogs!

The expense is not a plot among breeders to keep prices high, but instead reflects the cost of raising a difficult breed.  Most Frenchie breedings are done through artificial insemination and delivered via caesarian section.  Frenchie litters tend to be small.  Early mortality of the tiny puppies can be high unless the dam and puppies are monitored very carefully in the early days.  This makes the breeders investment per puppy substantially higher than in most breeds.
